Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that originates from the cells of the breast. It is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide, though men can also develop it. The cancer typically begins in the lobules (milk-producing glands) or the ducts (the pathways that carry milk to the nipple). In advanced stages, it can spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body, such as lymph nodes, bones, liver, lungs, and brain.

Types of Breast Cancer:

  1. Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS): Non-invasive cancer confined to the ducts.
  2. Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC): The most common type, spreading beyond the ducts.
  3. Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (ILC): Starts in the lobules and invades surrounding tissue.
  4. Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC): Lacks estrogen, progesterone, and HER2 receptors, making it more challenging to treat.
  5. HER2-Positive Breast Cancer: High levels of HER2 protein, which promotes cancer cell growth.
  6. Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC): Rare and aggressive, causing redness and swelling of the breast.
  7. Paget's Disease of the Nipple: Rare cancer affecting the skin of the nipple.

Symptoms:

  • Lump or mass in the breast or underarm.
  • Change in breast size or shape.
  • Nipple discharge (other than breast milk).
  • Skin dimpling or puckering.
  • Inverted nipple or pain in the nipple area.
  • Redness, scaling, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin.

Risk Factors:

  • Gender (more common in women).
  • Age (risk increases with age).
  • Family history of breast cancer.
  • Genetic mutations (e.g., BRCA1, BRCA2).
  • Hormonal factors (early menstruation, late menopause, hormone replacement therapy).
  • Lifestyle factors (obesity, alcohol consumption, lack of physical activity).

Diagnosis:

  • Mammography: X-ray imaging for early detection.
  • Ultrasound: Used to differentiate between solid masses and cysts.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Detailed imaging for high-risk patients.
  • Biopsy: Removal of tissue for pathological examination.
  • Genetic Testing: BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations.

Treatment:

  • Surgery: Lumpectomy, mastectomy, or reconstructive surgery.
  • Radiation Therapy: High-energy rays to destroy cancer cells.
  • Chemotherapy: Drugs to kill cancer cells or shrink tumors before surgery.
  • Hormone Therapy: For hormone receptor-positive cancers.
  • Targeted Therapy: Drugs targeting specific molecules like HER2.
  • Immunotherapy: Boosts the immune system to fight cancer cells.

Prevention and Early Detection:

  • Regular self-exams and mammograms.
  • Genetic counseling for high-risk individuals.
  • Lifestyle modifications (healthy diet, exercise, limiting alcohol).
